Concept:
Set in a small fishing village north of Boston, the facility was envisioned as an icon to embody “N” University’s commitment to protecting the marine environment. Given the sites isolation from the rest of town via the ground approach, the building was conceptualized as a modern lighthouse, making the seaward façade of the building the primary face of the facility. At night, a thin row of windows would illuminate the building, distinguishing it as a man-made object from the natural landscape of the peninsula. The building was embedded in the ground, allowing the landscape to overtake the structure, making the facility integral with the natural environment and almost invisible from the ground approach. The building was sited to take advantage of views to the sea, existing terrain, as well as adjacency to an existing underground army bunker which is currently used as ad-hoc laboratory space.
