Tubes

“Tubes”- part of the “Embodied” dance installation

First Year Design Studio
Critic: Frances Bronet
Inner Tubes, PVC Tubing, Nylon Strapping, Black-lights

Concept:

“Tubes” was created as a response to the work of STREB, a dance troupe known for their exploration of how the human body impacts with surfaces. “Tubes” was intended to extend the action of the dancers falls and to draw out the impacts which define their movements, into morphing, spatial environments. The installation was created in an abandoned riverside factory in Troy, NY. The team cut the flooring out of a structural bay, connecting two floors at nearly 24-feet total height. The main structural stays were made from PVC tubing, anchored to the structural columns and beams with tension connections. The tubes served as a structural webbing, interconnecting PVC tubing, and were lashed together at key points with white nylon webbing. During the performance, the dancers occupied spaces between the tubes, hanging from the PVC tubing, and crawled into and through some of the tube cavities.
